A Techonomy conference is held in Lake Tahoe, CA today and this moment presents some great speakers like Bill Joy, Nicholas Negroponte, Willie Smits, and Kevin Kelly. The conference presents a topic about the future of technology and that moment Nicholas Negroponte had the most controversial opinion about it.
Negroponte said that the physical book will be dead soon; at least in five years. He actually realizes that his statement is controversial and most people would be hard to accept it. Negroponte can say that physical book will disappear according to the fact that physical film is dead too. In the 1980s, it was predicted that physical film was going to die and now it happens. He also asks people to memorize their youth and the physical music. Today, those physical films and music has gone. Of course, his statement doesn’t mean that physical book will totally dead. He stated that digital books will be more dominant than physical book since people love to use their laptop to read any kind of information.
Apparently, his controversial argument is related to his One Laptop per Child Foundation. He plans to include plentiful books on the laptops so that children can access the information digitally. He thinks that it would be impossible to ship hundreds of books for the children and digital books can be the alternative.
