SATADIMM, First Generation of SATA and DIMM Combination from Viking Modular Solutions

The Sanmina-SCI Corporation’s division, the Viking Modular Solution announces the availability of the new SATADIMM (Serial Advanced Technology Attachment – Dual in-line Memory Module). The SATADIMM is the first generation in its class which combines the magic of SATA and DIMM technologies. This is an SSD module which is as classy as the Enterprise Class SATA II SSD and as sophisticated as the DDR3 240-pin DIMM. This new invention from Viking Modular Solution is allowing its user to improve the performances of the server’s storage and capacities.

The SATADIMM is completed with the technology of JEDEC MO-269. The combination of SATA technology in the DDR3 DIMM plug will bring the high performance to the SSD. Flixster Application has Reached the 20 Million Milestone

Flixster, online service for movie streaming based in San Francisco, California, U.S., has reached a milestone. Founded on January 20, 2006, until now, Flixster application has been downloaded for over 20 million times by gadget users. Flixster application supports the smartphone systems such as Blackberry, iPhone, and Android.

According to Joe Greenstein, the CEO of Flixster, from 20 millions of installed applications in various smartphones, 70% are active users; means that users access the web at least once during 90 days backward. This achievement is not for Flixster itself, is anyone worthy to be shared the credit, it is the movie reviewer Rotten Tomatoes. Flixtsers and Rotten Tomatoes have been working together since January 2010.

Besides smartphones, Flixster application is also installed in other gadgets like the iPad, Roku box, and Sony TV. As for the iPad, the number of Flixster application installed has reached 500,000. Meanwhile 10 days after the launching, users of Roku box and Sony TV has been reported to reach more than 30,000 to use the application. ioSafe to Release SoloPRO USB 3.0 External HDD

ioSafe, a manufacturer producing hard drives for variable use has announced to release an external hard disk drive (HDD) on August 18, 2010. The SoloPRO is an edition from the Solo HDD series from ioSafe. Solo HDD series from ioSafe is especially designed for business use. Formats available from the SoloPRO edition are USB 3.0 and eSATA which is commonly known as USB 2.0. The SoloPRO edition in USB 3.0 format can be received by peripherals using the USB 2.0 format. Those who want to upgrade the USB 2.0 to USB 3.0 can do it by installing the USB 3.0 PCI Express graphic card to their computing system.

With transfer speed above 100 Mb/second, SoloPRO is 3-4 times faster than the usual USB 2.0. The comparison is, data with the capacity of 1 Tb can be transferred to this external HDD within a few hours, meanwhile common USB 2.0 needs more than 10 hour to perform the same task. The available capacities of SoloPRO external HDD are 1 Tb, 1.5 Tb, and 2 Tb.

The SoloPRO external HDD in 1 Tb capacity will be sold $249.99, while for the capacities of 1.5 Tb and 2 Tb will be sold for$319.99 and $419.99 consecutively. The SoloPRO is planned to hit the computer market in September 1, 2010.

NVIDIA Agrees DARPA to Build Extra Sophisticated Computer

DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency), based in the United States, has granted NVIDIA $25 million to build a supercomputer. This institution, under the banner of the U.S’ Defense Department has agreed to have a four years research contract with NVIDIA. With such amount of modal, NVIDIA is hoped to develop GPU computing system with best performance.

The project rooted from DARPA is officially named the DARPA Ubiquitous High Performance Computing (UHPC) program. Taken from DARPA’s press release, it is found out that NVIDIA is not the only computer manufacturer DARPA is working with. Other than NVIDIA, DARPA also cooperates with Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Cray Inc., as well as other six established universities around the United States. In the future, this supercomputer project is expected to develop computers with high-performance system to overcome the what-so-called the computing crisis nowadays.

This DARPA project led by NVIDIA is expected to finish its prototype by 2018. And again, from DARPA press release, this supercomputer is calculated to have the features which is 1000 times better than today’s fastest computers. The project is among others aimed at developing the computer’s performances, programs, and its reliability.  In the future, when the program has ended and its results have been released, DARPA surely will undoubtedly have the most sophisticated computer of its era.
