If you live in a big city, you will likely to feel the polluted air around you which is caused by the smoke of many vehicles. In addition, though there are not many trees on the right and left sides of the road nowadays, there is still some dirt exists on the road surface. This dirt can be caused by some factors, including the result of the polluted air itself.

Yet, today there is a new smart invention that can solve both the dirty-road problem and the polluted-air problem. This invention does not have an exact name, but it is called the self-cleaning road. It is developed by some researchers at the University of Eindhoven, Netherlands in which they try to make both self-cleaning road and air-filtering road cleaner.

This invention works by getting the NOx gripped by TiO2 or Titanium Dioxide which is then baked into the pavements. Titatium Dioxide is such photocatalytic material which uses the sunlight to change the NOx to nitrate. This nitration of the NOx is then washed away by the rain. In addition, the materials of the road also break down the dirt and algae, therefore the road stays clean. Though there are still a lot of tests to do, the self-cleaning road sounds like a brilliant idea to make the road keep clean.
